Calgary Sun Columnist - Link Byfield: The big question

Calgary Sun Columnist - Link Byfield: The Big Question

Do we want unelected judges to make all key decisions?

This is a column asking the same question that I have asked in past posts. On something as important as same-sex marriage, or really any national issue that challenges the "fabric of the nation”, whether good or controversial, should be decided by the citizens of the nation, not some bureaucrat, politician, or judge. Have a National Referendum Day. Last I looked Canada was still a democracy. If not, when did it change?

Oh...and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or whatever the proper politically correct way were are supposed to say good wishes this time of year. Got to love freedom, eh?

This is one where the tech could really help us out: how hard would it be to have an online referendum, with suitable safeguards, and with touch-screen systems in public polling places for those without web access? Keep the hardware set up all year 'round, and put a lot more things to the vote. Get back toward a more pure form of democracy. Mind you, people have voted (via the ratings) for reality TV to replace smart scripted drama, so what the hell do *they* know? ;)

It probably wouldn’t be hard to set up but it might be hard to be certain that the votes are really from the person who hits the buttons. If there is a way, then lets do it. If not, one would have to maybe use two systems. They could be combined...like asking for a card with a code and then having to punch in the code in order for it to work. It might work if there were permanent polling stations where you need to register and have a card and then go to that polling station to vote on issues. Make it a 4-day polling time at the end of the month for example. The hard part about it is to make sure there is no fraud, as it seems if someone really wants to find a way to circumvent the system, they will find a way. But I do like the idea.
